Rickover's Summer Reading Program
Once again, Rickover cadets will have the opportunity to develop independence in reading and study skills while improving their vocabulary by participating in the Rickover Summer Reading Program. Rickover cadets can choose from a list of books selected by the Social Science teachers & NJROTC instructors. The books should be read during the summer and in September, can earn credit for the first assignments of these courses if they successfully complete a simple quiz to show proof of reading.
Please click on this article to view the Summer Program Parent letter and the list of books offered for this program. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cleary at mcleary@cps.edu.
We at Rickover wish you all a safe and learning summer!

Serving 33 years in the Navy, Vice Admiral Daly returns to Chicago to visit Rickover Naval Academy. Throughout his visit, Vice Admiral Daly was glad to see that Rickover had strong structure and a good curriculum. In addition, Vice Admiral Daly believed that Rickover is a school within a school that serves a special purpose: this special purpose being that cadets are exposed to the military concept without the pressure of joining the military. Vice Admiral Daly liked that about Rickover and loved the fact that the structure of our school is based on teamwork and discipline.
Lastly, before Vice Admiral Daly's departure, he wanted to share some advice with the cadets. He said, "Use your time well, do not think to yourself, I am just in high school...aspire to be excellent. Remember life is about choices, the more excellent you are the better choices you make. More doors will open for you when you are excellent."
Thank you for your visit, Vice Admiral Daly.
Important June Dates at Rickover
The following is a list of important June dates at Rickover:
Tuesday, June 15 - ALL lockers must be cleaned by 3pm
Wednesday, June 16 - Commencement Ceremony in Auditorium, beginning at 4pm
Thursday, June 17 - Non-Attendance day for students
Friday, June 18 - Last Day of School (9-9:30am)
Vice Admiral Ferguson walked into Rickover's hallways for the first time on June 2nd and was very impressed with the opportunities that Rickover is giving to the cadets. He believed that Rickover is making people better leaders and once they leave, they will be ready for the real world. During his visit, Vice Admiral Ferguson met Rickover cadets and staff, toured the building, visited classrooms and then gave a speech to the cadets before the Senior Bell Ceremony. An important comment that Vice Admiral Ferguson made to the cadets was, "Focus on academics and be a person of integrity and hard work. The world will reward a person of willingness, willingnes to do things outside of their comfort zone." Vice Admiral Ferguson also was able to practice his pitching motion with Cadet Meisels because he was throwing out the first pitch at the Sox game that night.Thank you, Vice Admiral Ferguson, for taking the time to visit Rickover.
